How to Choose the Best Workout for Your Body Type

How to Choose the Best Workout for Your Body Type

Body Barre, HIIT, Spin; we’ve all heard the names bandied about. But what type of exercise do each of these workouts provide? And how do you know what type of exercise is best for you? In an effort to help you choose the best workout for your body type we’ve gone back to basics in this post. Find out which workout offers the best cardiovascular exercise and endurance training, and what burns the most calories. This way, the next time you find yourself at our Predator Ridge Fitness Centre you’ll know exactly what to expect.

BARRE

What is it?

The barre method takes its name from the ballet training bar (barre in French) and incorporates a series of exercises inspired by traditional ballet classes. During a barre class you will use the bar as a prop to help you maintain your balance while performing intensive sets of exercises aimed at isolating specific muscles or muscle groups.

What part of the body does it focus on?

Barre classes typically focus on the inner and outer thighs, buttocks, and torso. Positions are often held for long periods of time; helping to build stamina and endurance.

What kind of exercise is it?

While every class is different, most barre classes combine strength training with a solid cardiovascular workout.

Benefits?

The Barre method places great emphasis on good posture. Because you must hold your body still while performing the exercises, it can be a beneficial exercise for anyone looking to improve their agility, posture or balance.

HIIT

What is it?

HIIT is an acronym for high intensity interval training. In a typical HIIT class you will usually find yourself performing a series of circuits that incorporate various high-intensity exercises such as jumping rope, burpees, mountain climbers and forearm planks. Each exercise is performed in quick intervals of 30-60 seconds at maximum intensity with a short rest period in between.

What part of the body does it focus on?

During a HIIT class you can count on using all your major muscle groups. Legs, arms, back and torso will all get their share of attention during these high-intensity, high-impact routines.

What kind of exercise is it?

A HIIT circuit is very similar to plyometric exercises in that it forces you to perform an exercise at maximum intensity, but only for a short burst of time. Count on a total body strength training routine combined with a serious fat-blasting cardiovascular workout that will leave your heart rate racing.

Benefits?

While HIIT routines can be hard on the joints, you will burn more calories than with a traditional workout. Not only that, the high-intensity cardio will help you to burn fat and keep your metabolism elevated throughout the day.

SPIN

What is it?

A spin class is an indoor cycling class performed on stationary bikes. Typically an hour or less, a spin class can differ dramatically depending on the instructor. In some classes you may find yourself spending hardly a moment in the saddle, while others may require you to go back and forth between sitting and upright.

What part of the body does it focus on?

It seems obvious that cycling for long periods of time would work your hamstrings, thighs, quads and glutes. But a good spin class will also get your oblique muscles and arms in on the action.

What kind of exercise is it?

Because every spin class is different, it depends on the instructor. A spin class is most certainly cardiovascular exercise, but more high-intensity classes might include intervals with sprints or hills that help to build both endurance and muscle.

Benefits?

A spin class will give you a low-impact cardiovascular workout which strengthens your core and builds both upper and lower body strength.
